The Treachery of Film

The Treachery of Images (Magritte, 1929)

When Magritte stands out with his most famous painting, where the form of a pipe is placed in the center of the composition accompanied by a message that “This is not a pipe.” he has dramatically changed the perception of visual forms their meanings. The avant-garde movement had a great chance to question the reality under extreme circumstances caused by the war atmosphere that could be felt all over the continent. We seek a new way outside the tradition only when tradition does not work anymore. When extraordinary changes dominate the society, there is no way but to question, “Is this a pipe?”

But when do we need to tell a story in a non-traditional way? In fact, I’m not sure about the reason behind trying to be ambiguous and sophisticated rather than being direct but I can assure you it is terribly fun! Thinking about the meaning beyond forms; trying to associate their fundamental characteristics with different phenomenons; creating an alternative narrative form that can be understood truly by just only the creator’s himself and sometimes even cannot be understandable for him is a striking creative experience for one who aims to extend the borders of the human mind.

Alone Gets Alone (Aydemir, 2022)

Experimental film’s strength on people differs for every person because it can be interpreted completely differently by two different people because of their past experiences and the way they relate to the things in the film. That is why while experimental films are a great field to examine on their own; their impact on different people would also be another exciting study.

Last words: I strongly suggest you experience one time creating an experimental film. You would discover not only yourself but also the ones who watch your film according to their feedback.
